While thinking about the true cost of some things, it occurred to me that starting a blog and then taking a siesta seemed like poor planning especially when I spent more than I planned (as usual) during the holidays and should be thinking about the best investments I can make in 2010. But really, not taking a break will cost me much more than the little roadtrip my husband and I are planning to begin the New Year.
Not taking the trip may cost me some good friends who would most likely understand but who have been waiting for me to have finished the book and get down to see them for some time now. Not taking this trip might cost me a happy hubby who has spent every weekend he has worked on our home looking at the calendar and smiling about this next weekend. And not taking the trip may cost me some perspective that I may have lost trying to launch a book, get all the gifts wrapped, all the cookies baked, pull off a wonderful family Christmas and now revive the house from three grown children and as many grandchildren (although the "grandkids" all have fur!)...Given that I feel like the past month was little more than a blur, the little trip should allow me to remember what really matters and come back in the New Year well nourished for whatever awaits me. So it is a sound investment regardless of how foolish the timing might seem.
I wish everyone a spectacular inner New Year. You know, when you silently make the resolution you never tell anyone but hope eternally you will look back on in one year and say you kept along with the countless others you may voice but may not really be as passionate about. So, whatever the cost...take some time for YOU...count your blessings, revive your soul and have that long talk with yourself about what you REALLY want to do this year. I know what I want to do but it is going to take this trip to really make it happen and since I really want to have a spectacular inner New Year, I am off for a few days of R&R after tomorrow, visiting long time friends, family and having a little celebration of another year well worn down but definitely memorable with my husband...See you in 2010.
An old saying in my family is that whoever you make contact with on New Year's Eve and Day will be in your life forever...So...GO MAKE SOME CONTACTS, with old friends, distanced family or whoever is important enough to last your life. Make the call, send the email, have a visit. Maybe by this time next year, you will discover if the "old saying" works for you too. Think of what it could cost you if you have regrets for not doing it.
Maybe there is something gnawing at you that you know you need to invest in too and the timing may seem less than precise, but sometime you just have to take the risk and no matter what it costs you have to do what really FEELS right.
Your question for the New Year...What is important to me no matter what the cost and how will I make sure that investment does not lose value?
