Millard Fuller was a millionaire who left Alabama for Georgia, met some people in the Koinonia Community and before long surrendered his personal fortune for a BIG IDEA. Fuller believed everyone deserved decent housing and he founded the organization known as Habitat for Humanity. One person with A BIG IDEA.
Jared and Betsy Saul began PetFinder in 1996 after making a resolution to do some good for a good cause. They wrote a program, approached pet shelters and 12 years later have placed over 10,000.000(yes that is 6 zeroes) pets. Two people...A BIG IDEA
Chuck Colson was indicted for his role in the Watergate scandal and spent time in prison, but rather than forgetting the life he sampled there, he went on to establish Prison Fellowship, now in over 80 countries and is credited for starting the famous Angel Tree program providing Christmas gifts to children of prisoners. One person...Another BIG IDEA.
Bill Magee was a surgeon who founded Operation Smile, providing free services to children who have cleft lips and palates in third world countries. He reportedly could not imagine a child who would never have an engaging smile because the area they lived in could not provide the necessary surgery to correct the defects. He has already given smiles to over 36,000 children. One person with A BIG IDEA.
My friend, Amy Gurrieri started Rockin Appalachia Mom's Project http://www.rampamerica.org after watching a television special about conditions in rural Appalachia. Amy isn't from there. She lives in Connecticut but she had A BIG IDEA and you would not believe what she has already done there.
Several individuals whose stories I shared in ONE MORE SERVING.http://www.onemoreserving.com made amazing contributions to society based on one single BIG IDEA.
You may think you lack the resources, time, energy or money to launch a BIG IDEA but really that is just an excuse and I am as guilty as well. But you don't need to be famous or have a huge support system behind you to make a difference. There are countless individuals who have provided meals, gift cards, arranged concerts, taken up a collection, hosted dinners to help someone in need whether it be a family facing a crisis, a child needing a transplant or an older individual needing round the clock care.
You probably ponder some issues regularly and often think, "I should do something about that" but perhaps as I do, you rationalize as many ways as possible why it isn't feasible or practical to pursue your BIG IDEA.
I've been doing a lot of thinking and I need to take a small step towards my BIG IDEA. We only go around once in life. I would hate to think that because I did not at least make some movement towards my BIG IDEA that I failed to somehow reach a need that is just waiting for me to take that step. What about you? Is it time to act on something that you have wanted to get started for a long time? Do you know of anyone that you feel compelled to reach in your heart with your BIG IDEA?
I hope you do, because I will be checking back again to let you know how my BIG IDEA is going and I would love you to share what is going on with yours.
Are you ready to take one step towards having your BIG IDEA become reality? 3-2-1...let's go!

Great Post...One question I often ask myself to help me realize how I can make a difference is....
ReplyDelete"How can I contribute TREMENDOUS value to the world?"
When we ask this question, we get answers...and I believe our answers often come in the form of our heartfelt desires...
