A few weeks ago, I ran out of contact lenses. I had a pair of non prescription readers to magnify print but I was basically non functional when it came to appreciating much of life. Colors looked faded, small details were missing and I barely enjoyed anything. My world was not different but it most definitely seemed so to me.
Someone once told me that we tend to see what we are looking for. I was skeptical at first but decided to try the theory out and spent several days seeing what I would notice. When I concentrated on looking for a particular situation whether happy individuals or someone in need, things I wish I had or blessings already bestowed, I discovered there is a great deal of truth in this.
We can choose to see what we want to see. If we want to see our shortcomings, they become readily apparent. If we want to see examples of indifference, they spring up like weeds. If we look for things that make us happy, many more things capture our attention than we might have anticipated; from the unconditional love of someone to something that satisfies our craving. If we are looking for things that are problems, they also have a way of surfacing without much effort. Everything from a leaking faucet to living paycheck to paycheck can make its appearance. The list seems endless.
Image via WikipediaLife is full of things we see but sometimes life needs glasses. I sometimes allow my perceptions of what I see to cloud what is really there. I might see an obstacle for me that is a welcomed opportunity to another person. I can view a circumstance another would think is trivial as a major event. I might see myself in a light that is no where close to how another sees me.
We see what we are looking for and much of what we see we already have pictured in our mind. Our perception can easily change the results. Sometimes we are pleasantly surprised and often incredibly disappointed. Is it because we saw what we were looking for but not with the glasses that could have made it infinitesimally more clear? Did we allow our personal view to change what really was there?
It is easy to see things the way we are rather than the way they are. Are you viewing your life through clouded lens or even the wrong prescription? Life needs glasses. Is it time for a check up to see if you are truly seeing what is there or simply looking through your mind's eye at what you want to see?
